Welcome back to a blog in which we celebrate every aspect of culinary travel. My very best wishes for a delicious year! I have just returned from two weeks of winter in Austria, having travelled safely there on Lufthansa. Staying in the pretty and friendly village of Westendorf in the Tirol is like going home – here locals open their hearts to visitors, and the hearty fare is all about comfort. After a hard day of skiing, punctuated with schnapps, rum and hot chocolate (muscle relaxants!), there is nothing better than Austrian apres-ski before a filling dinner. These varied from a traditional fondue to schweinshaxe, to Vienna schnitzel and pommes frites, followed by apfelstrudel. Yum. The focus for me now will be to lose a few of those kilograms gained by eating what is healthy, nutritious, grown on our doorstep and in season.
The 2019 JHP Gourmet Guide™ sold like hotcakes during the festive season. We hope that for those who bought copies are enjoying reading about the fabulous variety of cuisine and talented chefs in our country, replicating their mouth-watering recipes at home. Those who haven’t – get your copy from selected Woolworths stores and leading bookstores nationwide for R299.
With the world moving into a more digital space, it was no surprise that our newly launched luxury Gourmet Guide online magazine has been a success. The public and our followers spoke, and we listened. The online magazine can be found on www.gourmetguide.co.za free to read, download or print, full of meaty information, bite-sized nuggets of useful tips, travel ideas, recipes and marvelous competitions. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, these prizes are perfect.
Keep your eyes on us for upcoming dates of cookery courses this year, starting off with a chocolate and cheese demo. Expect tips, tricks and learn techniques as we play with our toys from KitchenAid. We’ll introduce you to flavour combinations courtesy of NOMU, and teach you how easy it is to entertain.
We wish all our readers a happy and successful 2019!
